The Joshua Tree National Park trail maps lead hikers through the Desert Queen Mine area, but do not reveal a special site beyond the trail end. Our hike will take us to that site. Along the way, we will pass old mining shafts, some mining equipment, and traces of minerals in quartz overburden. And as expected, we will be surrounded by typically magnificent JNTP landscapes and views.
The day will begin at our meetup location in the parking lot at North Palm Canyon and Racquet Club. Our 54 mile drive to the trailhead should take just under 1.5 hours. The last 1.3 miles is on a well-maintained dirt road. The 4 mile hike should be completed in under 2.5 hours, just in time to return to Joshua Tree for lunch (at your driver's discretion).
The Desert Queen Mine operated from 1894 to 1961, producing over 4,000 ounces of gold. Frank James made the original discovery and founded the mine. Some years later, Jim McHaney reportedly killed James and took control of the mine. How the 4,000 ounces fell between James and McHaney is a mystery perhaps one of our hikers will resolve.
