The Getty Goes Gay!

Queer Lens: A History of Photography

11 AM Docent tour leaving from the lobby of The Getty research Institute, located west of the upper tram station. This group needs to split into two parts door side and driver side.

Since the mid-19th century, photography has served as a powerful tool for examining concepts of gender, sexuality, and self-expression. The immediacy and accessibility of the medium has played a transformative role in the gradual proliferation of homosocial, homoerotic, and homosexual imagery. Despite periods of severe homophobia, when many photographs depicting queer life were suppressed or destroyed, this exhibition brings together a variety of evidence to explore the mediums profound role in shaping and affirming the vibrant tapestry of the LGBTQ+ community.

AND!

$3 Bill: Evidence of Queer Lives

1:00 PM Group 1

1:30 PM Group 2

Meet at lobby of the Getty research Institute.

$3 Bill celebrates the contributions of LGBTQ+ artists in the last century. From pioneers who explored sexual and gender identity in the first half of the 20th century, through the liberation movements and the horrors of the HIV/AIDS epidemics, to today s more inclusive and expansive understanding of gender, $3 Bill presents a journey of resilience, pride, and beauty.

We are planning an exclusive, private tour for the $3 Bill exhibit.  Although, perhaps, we could give the guide a tour ourselves down memory lane!

Leave Palm Springs  6:45 AM, to get to the Getty Center by about 10AM when the Getty Center opens.  Admission to the Getty Center and all the exhibits is free, there is no admission charge.  We would have time to not only see the two exhibitions, but view some of the collections at the spectacular Getty Center, and/or tour the gardens and the wonderful city views.
