Twilight, the period between sunrise and sunset when the atmosphere is partially illuminated by the sun, is divided into three phases: civil, nautical, and astronomical. Each phase is defined by how far the sun's geometric center is below the horizon. Nautical twilight is a period of twilight that occurs when the sun's center is between 6 and 12 degrees below the horizon. During this time, the horizon is still visible, and sailors can still use stars for navigation. It's a transition period between civil twilight and astronomical twilight, marking the beginning of true night or the end of day.
