A Birdwatchers Paradise!

Explore the tranquil beauty of Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve with an easy walk along a scenic loop that winds through over 1,300 acres of lush protected wetlands, just a short distance from Huntington Beach. The reserve showcases diverse landscapes, such as seabird nesting islands, freshwater and saltwater marshes, mudflats, vibrant riparian riverbanks, and tranquil waters. It’s a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to over 200 species and a frequent stop on migratory routes.  Bring your binoculars and cameras!

An Interesting History

In 1899 the Bolsa Chica Gun Club was established by wealthy businessman.  In 1920, oil extraction began in the wetlands which continues to this day.  In the 1940s, military bunkers and gun turrets were built to defend the coastline from attack.

In the 1960s, most of Bolsa Chica was purchased for a massive residential development.  State officials objected and the decades long battle to save the wetlands began.  In 1997, the state purchased 880 acres from the developers and in 2006 the restoration of the wetlands was completed.  The estimated cost was $147 million which included opening an inlet to the Pacific Ocean for the first time since being dammed in 1899.  The developers were eventually allowed to build 379 units which was much less than the 5000+ units that had been planned.
