The San Marcos Foothills Preserve is a 300-acre natural area at the base of the Santa Ynez Mountains, featuring grasslands, coastal sage scrub, and oak woodlands. It offers stunning views of Santa Barbara and the Pacific Ocean, along with opportunities for hiking, wildlife watching, and enjoying diverse ecosystems. The preserve protects vital habitats from development. Rich in history, the preserve is part of the ancestral lands of the Chumash people. In recent decades, it was saved from development by dedicated activists, preserving its role as a sanctuary for native plants, wildlife, and community enjoyment. The trail is open year-round and welcomes leashed dogs. Stay on paths, especially when crossing private property easements. Be prepared for overgrown sections and limited shade. Don't forget your water, sun protection, wear comfortable hiking shoes, and snacks if you like.
