Off Grid Camping Event

This trip is an off-grid camping event, with no facilities what-so-ever. There are numerous campgrounds on CA 38; the closest being Oso/Lobo group camps about 2.5 miles away with water and toilets. This campground is ad-hoc with no specific sites, parking pads, etc. We will arrive in the morning and select a site which should accommodate several campers. The club banner will be visible to help find where the group will be camping. Cell service is spotty in the area. The 1N84 road is rustic and rough, but almost any vehicle can access any part of the campground at a slow pace. Both tent campers and RVs access this campground regularly. It is fairly quiet on weekdays. The trip will go from June 3rd to 6th, though folks can leave earlier or stay later.

There are lots of trails in the general area, and a trail to the Santa Ana River from the campground. There are also 4x4 trails available, if there is a demand.

The campground is about 1 1/2 hours from Palm Springs, and it's about 1/2 hour drive to Big Bear City. There is a small restaurant and over-priced gas in Angelus Oaks, about 25 minutes to the west.

Location: East Flats campground is on 1N84 dirt road, off of East Jenks Lake Rd., south of CA 38 (map link click here).  East Jenks Lake Rd is halfway between Barton Flats campground and Heartbar campground. The elevation is just under 7000' so the weather is much cooler than Palm Springs. It will be spring there, so screen tents might be useful. There could be deer, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, and bears - though none is very likely.

Passes and Permits:  You will need either a National Forest Adventure Pass or a National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass for the event (click here).  To use a portable gas stove, you will will need to obtain a California Campfire permit by clicking on this link and watching the short video.

Schedule: June 3-6 (3 nights); schedule TBD

Weather:  The weather will be similar to Big Bear area, forecast click here.  June averages are 45-65f.

Note: No fires, unless fire rings have been installed recently.
