Cabot's Pueblo Museum & Historic Rock House
Learn about one of the original homesteaders and his adventurous, unique, charming lifestyle and his creative talents. Yerxa got off the train in 1913 and walked 7 miles across the desolate sand dunes to what later became known as "Miracle Hill". Join us as we travel back in time and reimagine being here in the early days. Then we will move on to 1946 and visit the Rock House, the only remaining structure that was built with local rocks. What secrets does this site have?
This historic house was built (1913-1950) by Cabot Yerxa, an early pioneer of the Colorado Desert. The Pueblo Revival Style structure contains artworks, artifacts of American Indian and Alaska Native cultures, and memorabilia of early desert homesteader life. Contemporary and Native arts and crafts are featured in the museum gift shop. Also on the property is an eclectic collection of outdoor art, including the 43 ft tall wooden sculpture by Peter Toth, Waokiye (Way-OH-kee), carved in 1978. It's the only one in California of Toth's outsized sculptures across the U.S. and Canada. ~ Wikipedia and Cabot's Museum
