Open Access Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks: Bommer Canyon
Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks is a 40,000-acre collection of nature preserves managed by Irvine Ranch Conservancy on behalf of the City of Irvine or Orange County Parks. The preserves extend from the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains to near the Pacific Ocean and contain sites of great beauty, cultural significance, and unique natural resources such as rare plants and animals. To protect these resources, most of these preserves are closed to the public except on “Wilderness Access Days.”
On Saturday Feb 19 the OCLB chapter of Great Outdoors will participate in the Wilderness Access Day at Bommer Canyon, which goes from 8 AM to 2 PM. We will be led by our own Robert Freese who is the Conservancy’s program manager for habitat restoration. During our hike, we will visit two restoration projects and learn more about the natural resources of the park. This will be a new area for us within the park.
Click here for a map of the park entrance is at the junction of Shady Canyon Drive and Bommer Canyon Road in Irvine. We will drive approximately one mile and park at the historic Cattle Camp. Be there by 8 as parking is limited. We will begin our hike at 8:15 AM and finish around 11AM. This moderate hike covers 4.8 miles with 600 feet of elevation gain. Bring at least 1 liter of water, sunscreen, and a snack. Rattlesnakes and ticks are possible. Rain cancels.
Please register on both our Great Outdoors site and also Let's Go Outside. Click here to register for the event on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks site is not required but is a good idea. You may need to create an account. Registration at LetsGoOutside.org provides good additional information.
If you cannot attend, please cancel your registration, so the next person on the waiting list can have a chance to register.
