Tachevah Canyon / Waterfall with Las Palmas Neighborhood Hike - North Lykken Trail--Northern Section
Date: Wednesday, January 29th Start time: 8:00am Duration: About 4 hours depending on pace/# of breaks Distance: Around 5 miles round trip Pace: Slow to Moderate Difficulty: Moderately Strenuous -- Total Elevation: About 450ft (gradual) - some minor scrambling/bouldering. Start Location: Where I reside (after signup, you will receive the address) Description: This is one of the few hiking areas where one can view a waterfall closeup (water is very likely to be flowing). It is a popular destination as well. Also, there are plenty of wonderful sights/views and history along the way. Starting from where I live, we will go a few blocks through a lovely neighborhood with decorative landscapes, famous for its Mid-Century Modern architecture. Continuing on, we then slowly scramble up a 'STEEP' side ridge (about 80 ft.) which eventually connects to the northern section of the North Lykken Trail. We then follow this trail to a junction and continue to head west into the canyon and towards the waterfall. Within the canyon, one will require some minor bouldering (not difficult) and pass through some high-growth vegetation. Wearing long pants/long-sleeved shirt is suggested. When next to the waterfall, an appropriate lunch/snack break will take place while soaking in the views within the deep canyon. While at that area, I will mention an appropriate, physical activity which is known to take place in the vicinity of the waterfall! While heading out, one will appreciate the views from the narrow canyon. The views--such as unique rock formations, the entire structure of the Las Palmas Dam, and a rare view--looking down at Palm Springs from the extreme west end. We will then continue on the last part of the North Lykken trail. Another break will be at the picnic tables. Afterwards, a steep descent down to the street. On the way back to where I live, we'll be going through another area of lovely homes and its fantastic landscapes--again, known for its Mid-Century Modern architecture. IMPORTANT: PLEASE wear adequate hiking shoes/boots. WARNING!: Sneakers will NOT be allowed on the hike. Also, wearing long pants/long-sleeved shirt is suggested, for high-growth areas deep in the canyon. Bring plenty of water (at least 2 liters) and Emergency Contact Information (ICE). Take along snacks as we will have a 10-15 minute rest next to or near the falls (water is very likely to be flowing), a hat (or sunscreen), and a wonderful attitude. Thanks. Also, pets are NOT allowed. Please call 760-320-2774 or email David at dhs321@gmail.com for inquiries.
