OCLB - Urban Hike in Signal Hill

We will be meeting up at the junction of Hill Street and Sea View Drive. There is ample parking on Hill Street and Stanley Avenue across Hill Street from 2390 Vista Ridge Road. Click here for map.
The city of Signal Hill has a patchwork of trails that wander around the hill. Unpaved trails mix with paved paths and city sidewalks. Some of the trails and the streets are steep, but most are moderate. The estimated total distance of the walk will be 2 to 3 miles.
We will start with a steep descent down Stanley Avenue, before making a right turn onto E 21st Street, followed almost immediately a right turn onto Junipero Avenue where we will pick up the Ridge Trail. Just before Ocean View Drive, we will make a right turn onto the Skyline Trail. We will have a rest stop at Hilltop Park, where there are benches, water and bathrooms. Following our rest stop, we will proceed to the Panorama Trail which merges with Panorama Drive.
As Panorama Drive ends at Temple Avenue, we will pass the Unity Monument and the California Landmark showing the site of the Discovery One oil well. From there we will turn right onto Hill Street and return to our cars.
Along the way there are some statues featuring Signal Hill’s history as the first major oil producers fields in the United States and the world. There are also signs detailing the history of the area with photographs.
From the top of the hill, on a clear day, Los Angeles and Long Beach are clearly visible. Also, the views include Catalina Island, the International Gateway Long Beach Bridge, Palos Verde Peninsula, the Laguna Hills, and the pyramid at California State University Long Beach. (The day of the scouting trip was foggy.)
The hill also has small parks along the way, the most spectacular being the Hilltop Park.
After the walk, interested hikes can go to a local restaurant for lunch together., such as La Chiva Colombian Lonchera which has both vegetarian and carnivore options.
Bring comfortable walking shoes, sun screen, sun glasses and a liter of water.
