A rare opportunity to see a full lunar eclipse and a blood moon. Hike up to the tables at the overlook viewing the lunar eclipse. We will be at a spectacular location overlooking Palm Springs from a ridge along the San Jacinto Mountains.
Due to popularity of this hike we are expanding the number of spots available. Hike Leader Howard Goldberg will co- lead.
7:33 pm Partial Eclipse begins Partial moon eclipse starts - moon is getting red.
8:41 pm Total Eclipse begins Total moon eclipse starts - completely red moon.
Bring headland or flashlight (red lens preferred to protect night vision), binoculars, snacks. Ten Essentials (click here), water (1 liter recommended), layered clothing to stay warm. Carry Emergency Contact Information (ICE). Sturdy hiking footwear with good tread and adequate drinking water are required.
When the Full Moon passes through the centre of the Earth's shadow during the eclipse, it is shielded from the Sun's bright rays. ... The sunlight is refracted through the Earth's dusty atmosphere and scatters out blue light on the visible spectrum, leaving red wavelengths to light up the lunar orbit.
