This is a 16 mile out and back hike.
The rating is hard due to the 2,398 ft elevation gain, although the trail is on a well-maintained fire road.
The canyon is beautiful and offers lots of nice views. The peak offers panoramic views from the coast to the San Bernardino mountains.
We will meet at the Black Star Canyon Trailhead at 8:00 and start the hike at 8:15. Put Black Star Canyon Trailhead in your GPS for directions. (all the map info and directions are on the All-Trails site).
It took me 5 hours to complete the whole hike, but that was with no rest periods...so we should plan for 6 hours for this hike - that would put us finishing up between 2:30 and 3:00. so people should bring snacks, lunch, suscreen, 3 liters of water and the ten essentials (Click here for the 10 essentails or go to The Ten Essentials for Hiking & Camping | REI Co-op).
The first few miles of the hike are relatively flat and there are plenty of oak trees, then there is a steady gain in elevation for about the next six miles and we will be in full sun.
The trail is shared with mountain bikers, but everyone was very friendly and respectful of each other.
Parking is free and is right next to the Black Star Canyon Trailhead. To get there, take the 5 Freeway to the Jamboree Rd exit towards the mountains.
Take Jamboree up to Santiago Canyon Rd and turn right, to Silverado Canyon Rd and turn left, to Black Star Canyon Rd and turn left...and take it to the end.
Depending on from where you are starting, other routes may work better. Click here for a map of the trailhead location or go to black+star+canyon+trailhead - Google Search
After the hike the group can meet up at Lazy Dog Restaurant, 13290 Jamboree Rd., Irvine 92602 for refreshments and food.
