The Great Outdoors Gay-Themed Film and Discussion Night presents...
Rebel Without a Cause
After moving to a new town, Los Angeles, troublemaking teen Jim Stark (James Dean) is supposed to have a clean slate, although being the new kid in town brings its own problems. While searching for some stability, Stark forms a bond with a disturbed classmate, Plato (Sal Mineo), and falls for local girl Judy (Natalie Wood). Jim, a teen kicking against authority and parental neglect, becomes both friend and fascination to Plato, a lonely younger kid.
The pairing of Jim and Plato has been described as the first in a mainstream film to depict homosexual desire. Rebel Without a Cause (1955) is one of the films discussed in the documentary on gay cinema, The Celluloid Closet. Join us for this classic of both gay and mainstream cinema!
