Great Outdoors OC/LB visits

Planes of Fame Air Museum-Chino, CA

Date: Fri. Sept. 27th, 2019

Trip Leader: Gary Spake E-mail: [email protected] Phone: 714 633-7483

Our gathering spot will be at the Century Stadium 25 Cinemark Cinemas –1701 W. Katella Ave., Orange, CA 92867 (near the Honda Center & Anaheim Stadium) The theater is about 1 mile East of the 57 Fwy, on Katella. Park near the Tilted Kilt and Starbucks (away from the hotel and theater).

We will carpool to Chino, meeting at 8:00 AM (sharp), so we can hop-in and go! Traffic going “inland” is usually light. We “may” need 2 or 3 vehicles, depending on how many people plan to go. If you can drive and are willing to), please let me know.  We intend to pay the carpool drivers for their fuel, (split between the carpooling passengers). The drivers are not paying for the fuel as they are chauffeuring us and putting wear & tear (hope no tears!) on their vehicle. This should be the fairest solution, so everybody pays somewhat the same for our transportation.

The story of the Planes of Fame Air Museum is the story of one man’s vision.

Ed Maloney knew that protecting our aviation history was important.

Today, his vision is reflected in the extensive collection of the Planes of Fame Air Museum, comprising aircraft and artifacts that might have been lost forever.

It begins with their mission

The mission of the Planes of Fame Air Museum is to preserve aviation history, inspire an interest in aviation, educate the public, and honor aviation pioneers and veterans.

Chino facility and exhibits

The Chino facility encompasses over 100K Sq. Ft. under roof and additional outside exhibits and restoration projects and “boneyard!”

Aircraft collection:

A total of 160 aircraft are displayed. Every aircraft at Planes of Fame Air Museumhas a story to tell.

Join us to discover some of aviation history and the lore of flight.  Their collection spans most of the Twentieth Century.  From the replica 1903 Kitty Hawk Flyer, built by the Wright Brothers through aircraft of the Great War of 1914-1918, including an actual flying ”veteran” of that war.  They have an ever-expanding assortment of planes from the Golden Age of the 1920s and 1930s, including several that represent the last of their kind.  At the heart of the collection are the warbirds of the Second World War.  These include aircraft from all sides of the battlefield.  We enter the jet age with examples from the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and several important test aircraft of the period!

Getting tickets ahead of time is recommended, but I would think that on a Friday, we would not have to buy them ahead of time, that is up to you! We need to have an idea of how many vehicles will be needed...

Lunch Plans?

There is a great “local” restaurant next to the Museum, but if we leave the museum early enough, and you like, we can get back and have lunch at one if the fine restaurants near the Stadium 25 parking, getting you closer to you home!. There are many choices, there…’Lazy Dog’ is one of my favorites…
