Your Great Outdoors Santa Barbara/Ventura Chapter invites you to an old fashioned July Fourth Fireworks Evening Potluck Picnic at the Cabrillo Ball Field, Cabrillo at Milpas, right across from the Santa Barbara Inn, Saturday, July 4th. 6-10 p.m. There will be a 22 minute Fireworks Spectacular at 9 p.m.

Come celebrate America with your Friends from the Great Outdoors!

Cabrillo Ball Field park is a nice community park, across from the beach and is the location of the Herbert Bayer “Chromatic Gate”, or the “Square Gay Rainbow”. We will be at the end of the park, opposite the “Gates”. There is a wonderful grassy area for blankets and camp chairs.

Greetings Fellow Great Outdoors Members! As the days grow longer and warmer and the calendar moves on into summer, and we’re thinking about summer vacation, summer camping trips, and all those fun things, there’s another thing that comes to my mind… Pride season! Hehe... Yes, that time is approaching again folks! And as always, I’m going to be looking for a few wonderful volunteers to man the Pride information booth for our little organization. Now, what kind of qualifications do you need for this job, you might ask?
Its pretty simple really… Have you ever been on a trip with Great Outdoors? Been to a potluck? Been to the pizza social? On a day hike? Participated with the group in any way? Well then, you’re qualified! All we ask is that you talk about what you’ve done with the group and enjoyed! Though you are welcome to volunteer as much time as you’d like, I only ask for a commitment of a two-hour shift usually.

Pride Events
July 11th, 2009 Santa Barbara Pride
July 12th, 2009 San Luis Obispo Pride

Feel free to contact me at any time if you’d like more info, or would like to snatch up your desired volunteer time early! I’m easy to reach at Countryboyjoe1@gmail.com

BIG thanks in advance to all who will be volunteering this season, and a big warm hug to all my past volunteers, without you folks our information booth would never happen!

See you at Pride 2009! –Joe D.

Upper Klamath
Are you ready for some adrenaline-pumping, high adventure? Back by popular demand, the SB chapter is bringing Great Outdoors back into the churning rapids. Last year, 24 of us took a trip down the Middle Fork of the American, and the Upper Klamath is a step up in excitement from that – if that’s even possible! We’ll cover 17 miles on class IV+ rapids through rugged volcanic canyon lands, past ancient Indian sites and views of the old west countryside.

Our excursion will be guided by Wilderness Adventures,Wilderness Adventures who proved to be an excellent outfitter last time. In the canyon we are greeted by exciting rapids with names like Caldera, Satan's Gate, Hell's Corner, Ambush, and Snag Island Falls. The Upper Klamath River is incredibly beautiful as it flows from Oregon into California and travels through the Klamath Mountains, which consists of several sub-ranges including the Siskiyous, the Salmon, the Marbles, the Scott, and the Trinity Alps.

You will be talking about this trip for years, after returning from touring the Utah part of the Colorado Plateau. During this tour, we will be visiting 5 National Parks (camping in 4 of them) and exploring or driving through 3 National Monuments and 1 National Recreation Area Our campgrounds are group sites in Zion, Bryce, and Canyonlands National Parks and Fruitia Campground (an orchard) in Capital Reef National Park.Utah We will be up as high as 10,000 feet in elevation to upper desert landscapes (at about 3,000 feet elevation) throughout the southeastern part of Utah. From Quaking Aspens to Cactus! At each venue, you will have choices of going on long hikes, short hikes and walks, driving around sightseeing, shopping, or just relaxing in camp with a good book to read. The scenery is nothing less than “Fantastic”. Every day we will be seeing “eye candy” from the time you arrive in Zion until you have reached the half way point on the return trip home. Every night, we will be having a campfire program with a different theme each night. There will be two potlucks during the trip (one Italian and one Mexican) with one traditional Great Outdoors Tea. Don’t miss seeing Arches National Park, Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument, Cedar Breaks National Monument, Natural Bridges National Monument, and Glenn Canyon National Recreation Area.

Join Us this Fall for our Annual Outdoor Skills and Leadership Program

Conducting oneself amongst nature is the basic intent of Great Outdoors. What you know about hiking skills, camping equipment, and the wilderness environment, can make your outdoor adventure much more fun--and safer too! Perhaps you'll never need some of the skills we'll teach you, but it never hurts to be prepared for things unexpected. Not only will you learn about keeping warm, choosing a campsite, and making water safe to drink, but you'll be taught minimum impact camping techniques so that you leave the natural environment for others to enjoy as well. A portion of the training covers group management and GREAT OUTDOORS leadership skills. Each student will be provided with their own training and reference manual.

Morro Bay State Park is a gem of a site for our annual Corporate Jamboree. Located on the shore of Morro Bay, with the famed Morro Rock as our backdrop, you can expect a three night/four day weekend full of activities. Morro Bay has everything for a perfect summer’s-end trip. The forested campsite was originally planted by the Civilian Conservation Corp crews during the 1930s. The State Park includes Ecological Reserve walks, the Morro Bay Museum, Morro Bay Marina with canoes and kayaks, golfing, trails into the watersheds and bicycling routes. Montana de Oro State Park, with its amazing ridge trails overlooking the ocean, is open to explore for day use.

We have reserved a large group site for tents and several close-by individual sites for those with RV’s or trailers.
